Decorating with DIY: Repurposing Items you Already Have

By Cecilia Twitchell

We all need change in scenery every now and then, but we don’t always have the budget to go out and buy new furniture. So, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks that can help you spruce up your home by repurposing items you already have!

Give your Furniture a Paint Job

Give an old chair, table, or bed frame a face-lift. A new paint job is a great way to breathe new life into old pieces of furniture. Don’t be afraid to to try a bold color or pattern; you can always strip it or paint it again if it goes out of style. There’s no need to buy new when you can update what you already have with a good can of paint!

Reupholster your Cushions

Invest in some new fabric and get your DIY on! Reupholstering is a totally doable home-project and does not need to be done by a professional. You’ll just need your new fabric, a crafting stapler, and a few other items to give your chair or couch cushions a complete makeover. If you’re working on more than one chair, consider mixing and matching contrasting patterns or colors for a trendy look.

Move some Furniture Around

You can always experiment with furniture placement. Sometimes the simplest thing like changing table angles or moving a bookcase from one wall to another can make a huge difference.

Use Curtains to Create a Charming Headboard

We love the idea of putting up curtains as a makeshift headboard. It gives the bedroom a delicate and romantic feel. String up some Christmas lights to add an extra dose of charm.
